Standard cable tie tags use a self-locking ratchet. Once pulled tight, they cannot be loosened without cutting — this provides tamper-evident security. For applications requiring reuse, we offer a releasable version with a push-tab release mechanism that allows the tie to be opened and repositioned.

Does the tag work on metal pipes?

UHF cable tie tags perform best when the tag head is positioned away from direct metal contact. The cable tie naturally creates a 2-4 mm air gap between the tag head and the pipe surface, which helps maintain read range. For metal pipes, orient the tag head so the antenna faces outward. Typical read range on metal pipes is 0.5-2 m with a handheld reader. For demanding on-metal applications, pair with our dedicated anti-metal tag.

What is the read range when attached to a pipe?

On non-metal surfaces (PVC pipes, wood, plastic): 2-4 m with a handheld UHF reader. On metal pipes: 0.5-2 m depending on pipe diameter and tag orientation. For NFC/HF versions: 2-5 cm with a phone or handheld reader. The cable tie format provides a small standoff from the surface, which improves UHF performance compared to flat adhesive tags on metal.

Which EPC scheme should I encode — GIAI-96 or SGTIN-96?

Use GS1 GIAI-96 (Global Individual Asset Identifier) when the tag identifies a serialized asset the owner keeps and reuses — valves, pipes, tools, IT cables, scaffold poles. Use SGTIN-96 when the tag travels with serialized goods for sale. GIAI is the correct choice for most cable-tie tag deployments. In refinery and chemical-plant environments, expect the lower end of the range (5-7 years) due to aggressive solvent exposure. For sub-zero outdoor applications (-40 °C sustained), add a cold-tolerance test in your pilot.
