Chemical-Resistant Epoxy RFID

RFID Epoxy Tag

Industrial Resin Encapsulation

RFID epoxy dome tag bonded to an industrial metal surface

Quick answer

RFID epoxy tags fully encapsulate an NFC, HF or UHF inlay inside a monolithic dome of industrial-grade two-part epoxy resin. The rigid, seamless, solvent-cast construction is qualified to IPC-A-610H Class 3 + JEDEC JESD22-A104 thermal-cycle + J-STD-020E MSL-1 moisture-sensitivity + IEC 60068-2 full severity matrix — the electronics-reliability envelope required for long-life industrial identification in refineries, chemical plants, offshore platforms, outdoor asset yards, automotive engine-bay and utility-infrastructure deployments. UL 94 V-0 flame rating + RoHS 3 (EU 2015/863) + REACH SVHC compliance + California Proposition 65 + NSF/ANSI 51 + FDA 21 CFR 175.300 resin-grade options unlock regulated deployments.

  • Monolithic two-part industrial epoxy dome — zero seams, zero gaskets, zero moisture-ingress paths. Qualified to IPC-A-610H Class 3 + IPC/JEDEC J-STD-020E MSL-1 + JEDEC JESD22-A104F 1,000 thermal cycles −40 °C ↔ +125 °C for long-life refinery, chemical-plant, offshore and outdoor-infrastructure deployments.
  • UL 94 V-0 flame-rated + UL 746A electrical-insulation qualified + ATEX 2014/34/EU Ex m / IECEx IEC 60079-18 encapsulated protection + NFPA 70 NEC Class I Div 1 / 2 hazardous-area compatible. RoHS 3 (EU 2015/863) + REACH SVHC + California Proposition 65 + TSCA substance-compliance.
  • Six epoxy grades: standard DGEBA amine-cured + silica-filled 200 °C high-temp + UV-stable hybrid epoxy-silicone + flame-retardant V-0 + optically-clear aerospace + FDA 21 CFR 175.300 food-grade. ASTM D543 chemical-resistance covers aliphatic + aromatic hydrocarbons, 10 % HCl, 20 % H₂SO₄, 30 % NaOH, jet-fuel, brake-fluid, lubricating oils.

Why adhesive-label, plastic-housed and snap-fit RFID tags fail in industrial chemical environments

  • Plastic-housed RFID tags (ABS / PC / PVC / PA) crack, yellow, chalk and become brittle after 6-18 months of outdoor UV exposure per ASTM G154 QUV Cycle 1 + ISO 4892-2 accelerated-weathering. Refineries + chemical plants + offshore platforms disqualify <5-year tag-life architectures at asset-integrity-management (AIM) audit.
  • Adhesive-backed labels (3M 7613T / 7874T / 7871) lose bond on surfaces contaminated with oil, grease, paint-overspray or chemical-residue. Surface-energy drops below the wetting threshold of typical 38-42 dyne/cm acrylic adhesives, driving label-detachment rates of 3-8 % per year on industrial equipment.
  • Tags with ultrasonic-welded or snap-fit housings allow progressive moisture ingress through the seam over 12-36 months — hydrolysis of internal bond-wires + antenna etch drives gradual read-rate degradation from 99 % to <80 % before outright failure.
  • High-temperature environments above 100 °C (steam-trap + autoclave + engine-bay + exhaust-adjacent) exceed the rating of standard tag housings + acrylic adhesives. ABS / PC melt above 150-180 °C; 3M VHB 4941 holds 149 °C continuous but loses bond above 232 °C long-term.
  • Hazardous-area installations in Class I Div 1 / 2 gas + Class II Div 1 / 2 dust per NFPA 70 NEC Article 500 require encapsulation per IEC 60079-18 Ex m. Standard plastic-housed tags are not ATEX / IECEx approved and are non-compliant for zone-rated installations.

No shell, no seam, no way in

Plastic-housed tags fail at the seam; an epoxy tag has none. The inlay — NFC, HF or UHF — is cast inside one monolithic dome of industrial two-part resin, built to IPC-A-610H Class 3, the acceptance class written for safety-critical electronics.

Cross-section of a seamless cast epoxy dome with the inlay suspended mid-resin, temperature envelope, ingress ratings and moisture classification
  • -40 °C to +150 °C continuous on standard resin, -55 °C to +200 °C silica-filled, with +220 °C excursions to 30 min per JEDEC JESD22-A103D.
  • 1,000 thermal cycles -40 °C ↔ +125 °C per JESD22-A104F Condition G with read-rate still ≥99.5 percent.
  • Read ranges: 2-8 cm NFC tap (ISO/IEC 14443-A, 13.56 MHz), 30-100 cm HF ICODE SLIX2 class (ISO/IEC 15693), 1-5 m off-metal / 0.5-3 m on-metal UHF (ISO/IEC 18000-63, 860-960 MHz).
  • Chip menu spans NTAG + ICODE NFC / HF parts, MIFARE Classic and DESFire EV3 access-control options, Monza R6-P + M750 / M770 / M775 Autotune UHF, and HITAG LF at 125-134 kHz.
  • IP68 at 10 m and IP69K at 100 bar per IEC 60529 + ISO 20653 — there is no gasket to age out.
  • MSL-1 per J-STD-020E: unlimited floor life at ≤30 °C / 85 % RH, because solid resin has no cavity to condense in.

The chemical gauntlet, per ASTM D543

The qualification list reads like a wash-bay inventory: 10 % HCl, 20 % H2SO4, 30 % NaOH, IPA, MEK, toluene, aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons — then a 100 bar / 80 °C jet-wash to rinse. The resin takes the bath so the inlay never does.

Grid of chemical exposures the epoxy tag is qualified against under ASTM D543 with hazardous-area and food-contact deployment notes
  • Refinery and chemical-plant CMLs: epoxy discs at API 570 piping and API 510 pressure-vessel condition-monitoring locations.
  • Hazardous areas: ATEX Ex m / IECEx encapsulation per IEC 60079-18 — epoxy is the approved encapsulation compound itself.
  • Food-adjacent sanitary zones: FDA 21 CFR 175.300 resin + NSF/ANSI 51 flush-mount button SKU; outdoor estates get the UV-stable hybrid with 20-year ASTM G154 weathering.

FAQ

What chemicals can the epoxy tag withstand?

The industrial-grade two-part DGEBA + amine-cured epoxy resin resists continuous exposure per ASTM D543 chemical-resistance classification: aliphatic + aromatic hydrocarbons (gasoline + diesel + jet-A + toluene + xylene), alcohols (IPA + ethanol + methanol), ketones (acetone + MEK short-term only), 10 % HCl, 20 % H₂SO₄, 30 % NaOH + 10 % NH₄OH, brake-fluid DOT-4/5.1, lubricating oils + transmission fluids, CIP detergents + enzymatic cleaners. The silica-filled anhydride-cured high-temp variant extends resistance to concentrated acids + bases + aggressive solvents for petrochemical service. Share your specific chemical-exposure profile (chemistry + concentration + temperature + immersion / splash / wipe + duration / frequency) for a validated ASTM D543 material-selection recommendation.

Is the epoxy tag ATEX + IECEx + UL hazardous-area approved?

Yes. The Proud Tek epoxy tag qualifies under ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU Ex m encapsulated protection + IECEx Scheme IEC 60079-18 (Equipment protection by encapsulation 'm') + UL 913 Intrinsic Safety + UL 121201 Nonincendive + NFPA 70 NEC Article 500 Class I Div 1 / 2 (gas) + Class II Div 1 / 2 (dust) + CEC Section 18. Applications include Zone 1 / 21 gas + dust hazardous installations in refineries, chemical plants, offshore platforms + fuel-handling facilities. The encapsulation compound is the approved barrier preventing ignition of surrounding explosive atmospheres. Declaration of conformity + coverage letter + material-declaration per RoHS 3 + REACH SVHC + IEC 62474 supplied per order.

Can the epoxy tag be used on metal?

Yes. Two variants are offered: (1) on-metal tuned with embedded ferrite isolation layer (25 × 5 mm disc or 50 × 30 × 4 mm plaque) delivering 1-3 m UHF read-range on steel / aluminium / stainless / cast-iron without spacer foam, and (2) standard off-metal for non-metallic mounting (plastic + glass + composite + painted / powder-coated surfaces) with 3-6 m UHF range. Specify on-metal when ordering if mounting is metallic — the ferrite isolation layer prevents antenna-to-metal detuning that otherwise collapses read-range to 10-30 cm on a standard off-metal tag.

How is the tag attached to the asset?

Primary method: industrial-grade 3M VHB 5952 (260 °C peak / 149 °C continuous) or 3M VHB 4941 general-purpose acrylic structural adhesive — bond strength 15-25 N/cm² on clean / dry / surface-prepared substrate. Secondary method: mechanical M3 / M4 cap-screw + Nyloc locknut or pop-rivet through mounting-hole for mission-critical retention. Tertiary method: ATEX hazardous-area variant uses 316L stainless back-plate + M6 stud-weld + high-temp two-part epoxy mounting-cement (Aremco Duralco 4460 / Loctite EA 9340) for 200 °C + permanent retention. Surface preparation critical per 3M application-bulletin: clean to ≥38 dyne/cm wetting energy + isopropyl-alcohol degrease + 24-h cure at ambient.
