How race timing works

How accurate is RFID race timing?

UHF RFID timing systems achieve ±0.01 second resolution per World Athletics Technical Rule 30 and AIMS/IAAF Course Certification Manual Section 8, which is more than sufficient for road races and mass-participation events. The limiting factor is usually the timing-mat resolution and software synchronisation (GPS / NTP), not the RFID tag. For elite competition where photo-finish accuracy is needed, RFID provides the chip time while a separate World Athletics-approved photo-finish system handles the official result.

Can the tag get wet during a triathlon swim leg?

Standard bib tags are not designed for submersion. For World Triathlon / ITU / IRONMAN / USA Triathlon events with a swim leg, use the IP68-rated ankle strap or wrist tag. The tag is sealed in a waterproof housing tested through salt-water, chlorine-pool and fresh-water exposure; the strap dries quickly for the cycling and running legs. UHF signals do not transmit through water, so the tag is read when the swimmer exits the water and crosses the timing mat at the swim-exit per ITU Competition Rule 4.

How many participants can be timed simultaneously?
