Flexible Conformable RFID

RFID Silicone Flexible Tag

Bend-to-10 mm Radius

Flexible silicone RFID tag bending around a curved industrial surface

Quick answer

RFID silicone flexible tags are conformable UHF/NFC transponders in a silicone or TPU envelope, bending to a 10 mm radius over 10,000+ flex cycles. The Shore-A 40-70 elastomer stack pairs with a flex-qualified IPC-6013 Class 3 antenna and shows no read-rate degradation, with cold-flex qualification to −40 °C. Six form factors cover hydraulic-hose ID (SAE J517), wearable PPE embedding (EN 397 / ANSI Z89.1), industrial-laundry uniforms and cable-loom wrap.

  • When the build spec is locked, true conformability — bends to 10 mm static / 15 mm dynamic radius over 10,000+ flex cycles without antenna detuning or chip cracking per IPC-TM-650 2.4.3 + JEDEC JESD22-B108. Enables hydraulic-hose ID (SAE J517 100R / ISO 6803), PPE-embedding (EN 397 / ANSI Z89.1), cable-loom wrap and sew-on soft-badge textile integration.
  • Six elastomer grades: platinum-cured VMQ silicone (−40 / +230 °C), FVMQ fluorosilicone (−50 / +260 °C), TPU thermoplastic polyurethane (high-abrasion cable), TPE-E soft-touch wearable, UL 94 V-0 flame-retardant, ISO 10993-1 medical-grade. Tear strength ≥25 kN/m per ASTM D624 / ISO 34-1. Cold-flex qualified to ASTM D2137 Gehman torsion −40 °C.
  • IP68 submersion + IP69K wash-down + IPC-A-600 Class 3 + IPC-6013 Class 3/A flex-PCB qualification. Six form-factors: cable-wrap loop, flat flexible patch, hose-ID wrap-around band, sew-on soft-badge, adjustable wristband, overmoulded flush button.

Why do rigid RFID tags fail on assets that bend?

The failure is mechanical, not electronic. Mount a flat, rigid tag on a curved or flexing asset and the interface becomes a stress concentrator: rigid FR-4 boards crack and debond within 2,000-5,000 service-cycles, epoxy domes cannot bend at all, and label adhesives let go after months of oil and flex exposure. The asset keeps its duty cycle — the tag doesn't get a vote.

Side-by-side comparison of a rigid FR-4 tag cracking on a curved hose within 2,000-5,000 service-cycles versus a conformable silicone flex-tag following the same curve and staying readable past 10,000 flex cycles at a 10 mm bend radius.
  • Stress concentration at the flat-tag / curved-surface interface drives delamination on hydraulic hose, helmet shells, cylindrical tanks and tight-radius pipe — cracking within 2,000-5,000 service-cycles.
  • Paper / PP / PET label RFID lacks the tear, chemical and UV resistance for industrial service — 3M 7613T + 7874T + 7871 adhesives lose bond on oil-, solvent- or flex-stressed surfaces within 12-36 months.
  • Hard housings fail EN 397 helmet, EN 166 eye-protection and EN ISO 13688 PPE requirements: they add strike-point protrusions where the standards demand frangible or elastomer-encased electronics.
  • SAE J517 100R hose duty requires surviving ISO 6803 + ISO 6801 hydrostatic-impulse testing — rigid tags crack within the first 50,000 pressure-cycles of a 500,000-cycle design life.

What is inside a tag that bends?

Same RFID physics, a different mechanical contract: the elastomer envelope takes the bending so the electronics never do. The stack returns to original geometry with compression set ≤25 % per ASTM D395 Method B, and antenna DC resistance shifts <5 % across 10,000 bends.

Cross-section of a bent silicone RFID tag: an elastomer envelope around a flexible printed-circuit inlay with a 25-50 µm polyimide carrier, a 12-35 µm rolled-annealed copper antenna and a low-modulus coverlay, bending at a 10 mm radius with the chip uncracked.
  • Envelope: platinum-cured VMQ silicone (Shore-A 50-70), TPU (Shore-A 85-95) or FVMQ fluorosilicone (Shore-A 60-75) — tear strength ≥25 kN/m per ASTM D624 Die C / ISO 34-1 Method B(a), tensile ≥9 MPa, elongation ≥400 %.
  • Inlay: IPC-6013 Class 3 / A flexible printed circuit — polyimide Kapton 25-50 µm carrier, rolled-annealed-copper conductor 12-35 µm, low-modulus coverlay adhesive. Minimum bend radius 10 mm static / 15 mm dynamic.
  • Fatigue proof: IPC-TM-650 Method 2.4.3 flexural fatigue — 10,000+ cycles at 10 mm radius with <5 % change in antenna DCR — plus JEDEC JESD22-B108 mechanical fatigue and ASTM D2137 / Gehman torsion cold-flex T₁₀ −40 °C (T₁₀₀ −55 °C for FVMQ).
  • Sealing: IP68 submersion 10 m + IP69K wash-down per ISO 20653; autoclave-safe medical VMQ variant validated to 500+ cycles @ 134 °C.

Which elastomer grade fits which service?

Six envelope chemistries, one decision rule: match the elastomer to the harshest thing the asset meets — heat, fuel, abrasion or a steriliser. Every grade shares the same flex-qualified inlay and ASTM D543 chemical-resistance testing (aliphatic hydrocarbons, IPA, 10 % HCl, 20 % NaOH, brake fluid, hydraulic fluid, CIP detergents, peracetic-acid wipe chemistries). Cold-flex qualification is pass / fail: no cracking, loss of elastomer rebound or antenna detuning after a 24 h cold-soak + immediate flex-test.

For primary autoclave duty — 3,000+ cycles of surgical-instrument reprocessing or CIP / SIP process lines — specify the dedicated high-temp silicone tag instead; this SKU's medical-grade VMQ variant is validated to 500+ autoclave cycles at 134 °C.

Six form factors, one bending architecture

Every SKU is the same flex-qualified stack in a different suit; pick by the geometry of the asset. Attachment is engineered per form factor — cure-bond, buckle, sew-through or overmould — so the mounting method never becomes the failure point.

Lineup of the six silicone RFID form factors with dimensions: cable-wrap loop, flat flexible patch, hose-ID wrap-around band, sew-on soft badge, adjustable wristband loop and overmoulded flush button.

Hydraulic hose, pneumatic and chemical-transfer service

A hose assembly is a wear part with a paperwork problem: the crimp record, impulse-test certificate and replacement interval all need to travel with an asset that spends its life flexing under pressure. The hose-ID band gives that record a body which survives the duty — validated through 500,000 pressure-cycles at working-pressure + 133 % proof-pressure per ISO 6803.

PPE, uniforms and worn assets

PPE tagging has one rule the catalogue cannot dodge: the tag must be softer than the gear it rides on. EN 397 and EN ISO 13688 demand frangible or elastomer-encased electronics, so a silicone patch or sew-on badge passes review where any hard housing is an automatic fail.

NFC, HF, UHF or LF — which air interface fits?

Range decides the band. A technician's phone taps NFC at 2-8 cm; a vicinity reader sees HF at 30-100 cm; a portal reads UHF at 1-5 m off-body and 0.3-1.5 m on-body. All ship in the same silicone / TPU form factors with the same bend budget, and post-flex read-rate stays ≥99.5 % after 10,000 cycles whichever you pick. For chip-level tradeoffs, see the full UHF chip comparison.

Read-range ladder for the flexible tag: NFC tap at 2-8 cm and HF vicinity at 30-100 cm both use 13.56 MHz loop antennas, while UHF at 860-960 MHz uses a dipole antenna reading 0.3-1.5 m on-body and 1-5 m off-body.
  • NFC (13.56 MHz, ISO/IEC 14443-A, NFC Forum Type 2 / 4, NDEF 1.0): NXP NTAG 213 / 215 / 216 (144 / 504 / 888 B NDEF) + NTAG 424 DNA AES-128 SUN CMAC — smartphone tap-to-read for PPE inspection and hose field-verification.
  • HF (13.56 MHz): NXP MIFARE Classic 1K / 4K + MIFARE DESFire EV3 AES-128 mutual-auth for credential use; ISO/IEC 15693 + ISO/IEC 18000-3 vicinity via NXP ICODE SLIX2 + SLIX-L anti-collision for 30-100 cm workflows.
  • UHF (EPCglobal Class 1 Gen 2 v2.1 + ISO/IEC 18000-63, 860-960 MHz): Impinj Monza R6-P + M750 + M770 + M775 Autotune — auto-compensates body-proximity detuning — plus Alien Higgs-9 for the global band.
  • UHF secure: NXP UCODE 9 / UCODE 9xe (extended EPC + Untraceable submode) + UCODE DNA (on-chip AES-128 per ISO/IEC 29167-10, anti-clone; the UCODE DNA City variant is no longer manufactured). LF option: HID Global HITAG S / µ (125-134 kHz).

Commodity vs Proud Tek qualified flex build

The commodity build isn't cheaper — it's just invoiced earlier. Same duty cycle, two builds:

Rigid FR-4 / epoxy / label RFID

  • Rigid FR-4 PCB cracks at curved-surface mounting within 2,000-5,000 service-cycles.
  • Epoxy-dome cannot bend — unsuitable for hose / harness / cable-loom / wearable PPE.
  • Paper / PP label lacks tear + UV + chemical resistance for industrial service.
  • Hard housing fails EN 397 + EN ISO 13688 PPE frangible-electronics requirement.
  • Rigid tag fails ISO 6803 hose impulse-test + 500,000-cycle hose-life requirement.

Conformable silicone / TPU flex-RFID

  • IPC-6013 Class 3/A flex-PCB + VMQ / TPU / FVMQ elastomer + 10,000+ cycles @ 10 mm.
  • Platinum-cured VMQ 500+ autoclave cycles + ISO 10993-1 biocompat + FDA 21 CFR 177.2600.
  • FVMQ fluorosilicone fuel / solvent / hydraulic-fluid + cold-flex ASTM D2137 −40 °C.
  • Six form-factors: cable-wrap, flat patch, hose-band, sew-on badge, wristband, overmould.
  • SAE J517 100R1-R17 + ISO 6803 + EN 397 + ANSI Z89.1 + EN ISO 13688 qualified.

Flex-PCB + PPE + hose regulatory anchor

Four rulebooks govern the places this tag lives — flex circuitry, hydraulic hose, and PPE. Conformable silicone + TPU flex-RFID is the only tag architecture qualified to simultaneously satisfy all four regulatory frameworks for hydraulic-hose ID, wearable PPE embedding + textile soft-goods integration.

Framework What it defines
IPC-6013 Class 3/A Highest-reliability performance specification for flexible + rigid-flex printed boards (current revision IPC-6013E)
IPC-TM-650 2.4.3 Flexural-fatigue test methodology behind the bend-cycle qualification
SAE J517 + ISO 6803 Hydraulic-hose service-life testing for hose-mounted identification
EN 397 + ANSI Z89.1 + EN ISO 13688 Industrial head-protection + PPE clothing requirements for wearable embedding

FAQ

What is the minimum bend radius + how many flex cycles can the tag survive?

The silicone + TPU flex-tag is qualified to 10 mm static / 15 mm dynamic minimum bend radius over 10,000+ flex cycles per IPC-6013 Class 3 / A flexible-printed-circuit + IPC-TM-650 Method 2.4.3 flexural-fatigue + JEDEC JESD22-B108 mechanical-fatigue standards. No antenna detuning + no chip cracking + <5 % antenna-DCR change post-cycle. The elastomer envelope returns to original geometry with zero permanent-set memory via ASTM D395 Method B compression-set ≤25 % @ 70 h / 100 °C. For hydraulic-hose deployments, the hose-ID wrap-around band survives 500,000 pressure-cycles per ISO 6803 hydrostatic-impulse at working pressure + 133 % proof-pressure.

Can the silicone flex-tag survive autoclave sterilisation?

The platinum-cured medical-grade VMQ silicone variant is validated through 500+ prevacuum autoclave cycles at 134 °C / 18 min per ANSI/AAMI ST79 + EN 13060 for healthcare soft-goods deployments (surgical-gown, re-usable-linen, patient-lifter). For primary autoclave-duty applications (3,000+ cycles for surgical-instrument reprocessing), the dedicated high-temp silicone SKU (rfid-high-temp-silicone-tag) carries higher-cycle validation. The TPU + TPE-E variants are not autoclave-compatible — they are for non-medical mechanical-flex applications. Specify medical-grade VMQ + ISO 10993-1 biocompat + FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 CoA requirement in the purchase order.

Is NFC, HF or UHF better for my application?

NFC (13.56 MHz, ISO/IEC 14443-A, NTAG 213 / 215 / 216 / 424 DNA) is optimal for smartphone tap-to-read at 2-8 cm range — best for PPE inspection, hose-assembly field-verification, patient-wristband look-up. HF (13.56 MHz, ISO/IEC 15693, ICODE SLIX2) extends range to 30-100 cm for semi-automated vicinity-reader workflows. UHF (860-960 MHz, EPC Class 1 Gen 2 v2.1, Impinj M775 + UCODE 9xe / DNA) delivers 1-5 m off-body + 0.3-1.5 m on-body range for automated portal + handheld bulk-tracking through industrial-laundry tunnels, hose-assembly manufacturing lines, PPE issue / return gates. All three air-interfaces are offered in the same silicone / TPU flex form factor — mix-and-match across a programme is supported.

How is the flex-tag attached to the asset?

Five attachment methods match the six form-factor SKUs. (1) Cable-wrap silicone loop uses 316L stainless buckle + silicone cure-bond closure for hose + pipe + spindle + cable-loom 5-60 mm diameters. (2) Flat flexible patch uses Dow MasterSil 151 medical-grade silicone adhesive or 3M 9088 transfer-adhesive or 2-mm sew-through holes for helmet-cap + harness-webbing + vest-panel. (3) Hose-ID wrap-around band uses 316L buckle + silicone cure-bond + laser-marked SAE J517 identifier. (4) Sew-on soft-badge uses silicone cure-bond + 1.5-mm sew-through holes (4 per badge) for PPE clothing + industrial-laundry + healthcare-soft-goods integration. (5) Overmoulded flush button uses silicone cure-bond for textile overmould + glove-cuff embed + smart-garment integration. Specify the target substrate + attachment-preference for a validated mounting-matrix recommendation.

What are the MOQ and lead times for silicone flexible tags?

MOQ is 500-1,000 units for standard SKUs and 2,000-5,000 units for custom geometry / 2K LSR overmould / sew-on soft-badge / colour-coded builds. Lead time runs 3-4 weeks for cable-wrap loops, flat patches and wristbands; 5-7 weeks for hose-ID bands, sew-on soft-badges and overmoulded flush-buttons; and 8-10 weeks where custom geometry, medical UDI provisioning or PPE-embed qualification applies. A 2-week rush pilot build of 100-500 units is available on the standard SKU subset.

How many industrial wash cycles does the silicone tag survive?

The silicone-encased sew-on badge is rated for 50-100 industrial wash cycles under ISO 15797 tunnel-wash conditions (85 °C wash + 180 °C tunnel-finish). Where a uniform-rental programme needs a higher rating, specify a rigid PPS laundry chip (rated 300-500 cycles) or a textile / woven laundry tag (rated 200-300 cycles) instead — the silicone badge is the right choice where PPE standards or wearer comfort rule out a rigid chip.

Can Proud Tek pre-encode and colour-code the tags before shipment?

Yes. Tags ship encoded to your identifier scheme — GS1 SGTIN-96 for serialised items, GIAI-96 or GRAI-96 for reusable assets, per EPC Tag Data Standard v2.1 — with laser-marked identifiers on the hose-ID band and colour-coded elastomer options on custom orders. Provide the numbering range and the target platform (EPCIS 2.0-compatible systems supported) and the encoding is validated at first-article stage.
