Sewn-In RFID

UHF RFID Woven Care Labels

Permanent Sewn-In ID

Hands holding a pile of white textile RFID laundry tags with wavy woven antennas

Quick answer

UHF RFID woven care labels embed a flexible UHF RFID inlay into a fabric care label that is sewn permanently into the garment seam. Unlike removable hang tags, the RFID stays with the garment through its entire lifecycle — from factory through retail to the consumer's closet. And on through resale, rental, repair and recycling under the EU ESPR 2024/1781 Digital Product Passport.

  • Permanent RFID: sewn into the garment seam, the tag survives retail, consumer washing and second-hand resale.
  • Dual-purpose label: combines mandatory care/content instructions (ISO 3758 care symbols, fibre content) with RFID inventory tracking in one label.
  • Washable construction: ISO 6330:2021 tested to 50+ home wash cycles at 40 °C, or ISO 15797:2017 industrial-laundry rated for workwear.

Challenges brands face with permanent garment RFID identification

A care-label RFID has to satisfy textile labelling law, survive consumer laundering, and still read cleanly when the garment is on a hanger, on a body or in a resale-intake bin. Commodity inlays fail one of those tests more often than all three.

  • 50+ISO 6330 home wash cycles at 40 °C
  • 2027EU ESPR textile DPP rollout
  • 1-4 mon-garment read range
  • SGTIN-96 / 198EPC schemes for unique product identifier
  • Hang tags are removed at point of sale, leaving no RFID carrier for post-purchase use cases like returns authentication, resale verification, and the EU Digital Product Passport (DPP) mandate taking effect from 2027.
  • Standard NFC or RFID stickers applied to care labels delaminate after 3–5 wash cycles, failing wash endurance tests and voiding retailer compliance certifications for permanent sewn-in labeling.
  • Garment factories require the care label to carry legally mandated fiber content and care symbols. Sourcing a separate RFID inlay that integrates with existing label weaving lines without disrupting production is technically complex.
  • Flexible inlay antennas on garments detune when in contact with the human body, causing read ranges to drop below 1 meter and making reliable scanning during returns processing or rental check-in unreliable.
  • Brands preparing for circular economy programs (resale, repair, rental) cannot reliably track individual garments once the removable hang tag is gone, breaking the chain of custody needed for ESG reporting.

How Proud Tek solves permanent garment RFID with woven care labels

The woven care label is a compliance artefact first and an RFID inlay second. Proud Tek's build integrates both obligations into a single loom-produced component so that the same label satisfies textile law, survives ISO-defined laundering and carries an EPCIS-ready SGTIN.

Commodity care-label RFID sticker

  • Sticker applied on top of an existing care label; delaminates at 3-5 washes
  • Separate label for care symbols + fibre content + origin; extra stitch-in cost
  • Generic UHF inlay not tuned for body-detuning; <1 m read range on-body
  • EPC left blank at manufacture; no SGTIN-96 chain-of-custody
  • No DPP / resale / rental integration path

Proud Tek woven sewn-in care label

  • Flexible inlay encapsulated between polyester layers at the loom; ISO 6330 50+ cycles verified per batch
  • Care symbols (ISO 3758), fibre content (EU 1007/2011 / FTC 16 CFR 423) and brand woven into the same label face
  • On-body-tuned antenna design (Impinj M730/M750, UCODE 8/9, Higgs-9) sustains 1-4 m read range
  • SGTIN-96 / SGTIN-198 pre-encoded from the buyer's GS1 Company Prefix with 100% read-back verification
  • GS1 Digital Link URI overprinted + encoded — ready for ESPR 2024/1781 DPP Art. 9(1)(f) and circular-economy resale/rental intake
  • Full encapsulation engineering: our woven polyester labels encase the flexible UHF inlay between fabric layers during converting. Passing ISO 6330 wash endurance tests at 50+ cycles at 40 °C with tumble drying, and ISO 15797 industrial wash protocols at 60 °C for workwear.
  • Single label, dual function: we weave the care symbols and fiber content text directly into the label face, so the RFID carrier meets EU Regulation 1007/2011 and FTC 16 CFR 423 requirements without adding a second label to the garment construction.
  • Flexible inlay selection (Impinj M730/M750, NXP UCODE 8/9/DNA, Alien Higgs-9) and antenna designs specifically tuned for on-body detuning environments maintain 1–4 m read range through the garment seam.
  • EU DPP readiness: the sewn-in tag's EPC (SGTIN-96 / 198) serves as the permanent digital product identifier linking to your DPP cloud record via GS1 Digital Link, positioning your brand ahead of the 2027 ESPR textile mandate.
  • Variable data overprinting: we thermally overprint size codes, style numbers, and QR backup codes on each label, enabling direct integration with your PLM and WMS systems via a single SKU identifier.

Buyer-side playbook — sewn-in RFID lifecycle

Figures below are directional benchmarks drawn from buyer conversations and ESPR 2024/1781 / ISO 6330 / EPCIS 2.0 reference implementations; individual results depend on garment construction, laundering regime, resale-platform choice and DPP cloud-registry topology.

  1. Step 1
Omnichannel retailers deploying sewn-in RFID collapse returns-intake scan time to sub-2-second SGTIN look-ups versus manual barcode retrieval, with the RFID still readable on returned garments that have lost or damaged hang-tag barcodes.
  2. Step 2
Luxury resale and authentication platforms use the sewn-in SGTIN-96 (or SGTIN-198 for luxury alphanumeric serials) plus EPCIS 2.0 'inspecting' events to corroborate authenticity at consignment intake, cutting consignor-payout fraud tied to counterfeit goods.
  3. Step 3
Brands piloting ESPR DPP compliance on textile pre-launches use the sewn-in EPC as the Article 9(1)(f) unique product identifier two to three years before the 2027 textile-category deadline, with GS1 Digital Link URIs overprinted on the label face for phone-camera fallback.
  4. Step 4
Managed uniform and workwear programmes track wash counts per garment via ISO 15797-rated labels, moving retirement decisions from fixed calendar schedules to evidence-based lifecycle analytics supplied by the EPCIS event log.

Sewn-in RFID lifecycle programme timeline

  1. Weeks 1-3 — PLM + label-face design lock

Confirm GS1 Company Prefix, SGTIN-96 vs SGTIN-198 decision, ISO 3758 care-symbol set, fibre content per EU 1007/2011 / FTC 16 CFR 423, origin text, brand mark and label dimensions (30×60 mm → 40×100 mm).

  2. Weeks 4-6 — Inlay tuning + ISO 6330 qualification

    Select flexible inlay (M730/M750, UCODE 8/9/DNA, Higgs-9), tune antenna for garment-category detuning, run ISO 6330 50-cycle home-wash or ISO 15797 25-cycle industrial-wash qualification with RSSI before/after capture.

  3. Weeks 7-10 — Pilot style + EPCIS wiring

Sew the qualified label into one pilot style across the full factory → DC → store → consumer → resale path; wire EPCIS 2.0 ObjectEvents (commissioning → departing → receiving → returning → inspecting → destroying) into the DPP registry / resale-platform intake.

  4. Month 4+ — Scale-out & DPP rollout

Roll the qualified label across the catalogue; integrate GS1 Digital Link URI overprinting on the label face; federate DPP payloads to CIRPASS / Aura / TrusTrace or the brand's own ledger ahead of the 2027 ESPR textile deadline.

Applications beyond retail inventory

  • Returns processing: scan returned garments instantly to verify purchase, check for fraud and restock faster.
  • Omnichannel fulfillment: real-time inventory accuracy enables ship-from-store, BOPIS and reserve-online-pickup-in-store.
  • Brand authentication: verify genuine products for secondhand marketplaces and consignment stores.
  • Circular economy: track garments through resale, rental, repair and recycling programs.
  • EU Digital Product Passport. The sewn-in RFID tag serves as the digital product passport carrier mandated for textiles starting 2027.
  • Uniform and workwear management. Track garment usage, wash counts and retirement for managed uniform programs.

Construction and durability

The RFID care label consists of a flexible UHF RFID inlay (chip + antenna on thin PET film) encapsulated between layers of woven polyester fabric. The encapsulation protects the inlay from mechanical stress during sewing, wearing and washing. The antenna is designed on a flexible substrate that bends with the fabric without cracking.

We test every label design to withstand the ISO 6330:2021 standard wash protocol — a minimum of 50 wash cycles at 40 °C with tumble drying. Labels for industrial workwear are rated per ISO 15797:2017 for harsher conditions (60 °C wash, industrial press drying). The woven polyester carrier is the same material used for standard care labels, so it integrates seamlessly into existing garment construction.

Printing and content

  • Care symbols: standard ISO 3758:2023 care symbols woven or printed on the label face.
  • Fiber content: material composition text as required by FTC 16 CFR 423 (US), EU Regulation 1007/2011, etc.
  • Country of origin: 'Made in' text per import regulations.
  • Brand logo: your brand mark woven into the label design.
  • Variable data: size code, style number, production date printed via thermal transfer overprinting.
  • QR code: optional printed GS1 Digital Link QR code as a visual/digital backup to the embedded RFID.

FAQ

Will the RFID inlay survive home washing?

Yes. Our RFID care labels are tested per ISO 6330:2021 and withstand 50+ wash cycles at 40 °C with tumble drying. The flexible inlay is encapsulated to protect against water ingress, mechanical agitation and heat. For garments labeled 'hand wash only' or 'dry clean only,' the tag will easily exceed the 50-cycle rating. Workwear variants are qualified to ISO 15797:2017 industrial-laundry protocols.

Can the consumer remove or disable the RFID tag?

The RFID care label is sewn into the garment seam like a standard care label. A consumer could cut it out with scissors, just as they could cut out any care label. However, the RFID chip can only be read at very close range (a few meters) and contains only a product identifier (EPC). No personal data is stored on the tag.

How does this support the EU Digital Product Passport?

The EU ESPR regulation (Regulation (EU) 2024/1781) requires textiles sold in the EU to carry a Digital Product Passport (DPP) starting from 2027. The DPP must include information about materials, manufacturing, repairability and recyclability, accessible via a unique product identifier. The RFID chip in the sewn-in care label carries this unique identifier (SGTIN-96 or SGTIN-198), which links via GS1 Digital Link to the product's DPP data stored in a cloud database.

Which textile-compliance and labelling standards apply to RFID woven care labels?

Our woven care labels meet EU Regulation (EU) No 1007/2011 on textile fibre names + Delegated Act 2018/122, U.S. Textile Fibre Products Identification Act (16 CFR Part 303), FTC Care Labelling Rule (16 CFR Part 423), Canadian Textile Labelling Act (C.R.C. c.1551), Japanese Household Goods Quality Labelling Act (JIS L 0001) and the ISO 3758:2023 International care-symbol system. RFID wash endurance is tested per ISO 6330:2021 (domestic laundering) and ISO 15797:2017 (industrial laundering). For the EU textile DPP under ESPR (Regulation (EU) 2024/1781), the woven label's RFID SGTIN-96 serves as the permanent 'unique product identifier' specified in Article 9(1)(f), resolvable via GS1 Digital Link to the DPP payload. The woven construction also meets OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 Annex 6 (Product Class I+II) for skin-contact textiles.

How do the woven-label EPCs integrate with circular-economy platforms for resale, rental and recycling?

The SGTIN-96 encoded at manufacture persists through retail, consumer ownership, secondary resale, rental and end-of-life collection. EPCIS 2.0 (ISO/IEC 19987:2015) ObjectEvents are emitted at each lifecycle checkpoint: `commissioning` (factory), `departing`/`arriving` (DC/store), `receiving` (consumer POS), `returning` (resale intake on StockX, Vestiaire Collective, The RealReal, thredUP, Depop), `inspecting` (authentication), `destroying` (end-of-life / recycling). For rental platforms (Rent the Runway, Nuuly, Urbn Box, Ark Rental) the care-label RFID supports per-garment wash-count tracking and fleet condition analytics. End-of-life recyclers (Renewcell, Worn Again Technologies, Circ) read the chip to identify fibre composition without physical material analysis, accelerating textile-to-textile recycling routing.
