Regulator update

Regulator update, 22 April 2024: MIIT notice No. 76 of 2024, in force from 1 November 2024, applies China’s 900 MHz RFID rules to 920–925 MHz and repeals the 2007 trial rules for 800/900 MHz RFID. From that date MIIT no longer accepts type-approval applications for 840–845 MHz RFID equipment; equipment already type-approved for that band may still be sold and used until it is retired. 工业和信息化部关于印发《900MHz频段射频识别(RFID)设备无线电管理规定》的通知(工信部无〔2024年〕76号)

The inlay is a starting point, not a guarantee: the tuning is confirmed per order, and you test the samples with your readers on your items. Bands and power limits are GS1's; check with the national regulator before installing readers.

Why inlay tuning matters

A UHF inlay's antenna is tuned to the band where its tags will be read, and to the material behind it. Europe reads at 865–868 MHz under ETSI EN 302 208 and the United States at 902–928 MHz under 47 CFR 15.247, so an inlay tuned for one band is not the natural choice for the other. A broadband design covers both, with samples tested at each band. Whichever you start from, the tuning is confirmed per order.

The material matters as much as the region: the same inlay reads differently on cardboard, plastic or a bottle of water, and a standard inlay does not read reliably on metal. Tell us every country and every surface; we match the inlay, and your integrator's test with your readers qualifies it for rollout.

Reading the table

  • Power is the maximum reader (interrogator) output GS1 lists, stated as ERP (referenced to a half-wave dipole) or EIRP (referenced to an isotropic antenna). EIRP = 1.64 × ERP (+2.15 dB), so 2 W ERP ≈ 3.3 W EIRP and 4 W EIRP ≈ 2.4 W ERP. It sets what your integrator may configure; it is not a property of the tag.
  • Technique, as GS1 abbreviates it: FHSS is frequency hopping spread spectrum, LBT is listen before talk, and ETSI means operation per ETSI EN 302 208.
  • The 915–921 MHz upper band in Europe: GS1 notes that under Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2018/1538, amended by (EU) 2022/172, readers may transmit at 4 W ERP only at the centre frequencies 916.3 MHz, 917.5 MHz and 918.7 MHz, and some EU member states implement fewer channels or none. GS1 counts 34 CEPT countries that have implemented one or both decisions and lists Liechtenstein and Switzerland with limited implementation. Where a country lists both the 865–868 MHz band and the upper band, the table suggests an ETSI-band inlay; if your readers use the upper band, start from a broadband design. The table gives the same advice for North Macedonia, which GS1's summary counts among the countries that have implemented the upper band although its table row lists no upper band.
  • Several countries: when the same tags are read in countries with different bands, start from a broadband design. Use Compare in the table to check a list of countries.

Status of the data
GS1 calls the document an unofficial overview and gives no warranty for it. Rules change, and regulator names are shown as GS1 lists them, so some may be out of date: confirm the current national rules with the regulator or your integrator before installing readers.
What we added
The regions, search names, the inlay to start from and the dated regulator update for China, which cites the regulator's own notice. The note on North Macedonia is ours too: it points to GS1's summary, not to a band in its table. GS1 lists regulator contact details; we leave them out.

Tell us where the tags will be read

Send the countries, the items and your readers. We produce UHF labels and dry and wet inlays in our Shenzhen factory and propose the inlay for your bands; its tuning is confirmed per order and tested on samples. Standard samples are free; customised samples carry a setup fee.
