FAQ
Is a FIDO2 card the same as a smart card with a PKI certificate?
No. PKI smart cards carry a certificate issued by your CA and require middleware plus a card reader on every workstation. FIDO2 credentials are enrolled directly by your identity provider over the WebAuthn standard - no certificate authority, no workstation middleware. Some enterprises run both on one badge; the card can carry a FIDO2 authenticator and a PKI applet if your platform needs it.
Do we need special readers on every desk?
For NFC-tap login, any NFC reader your fleet already exposes to the browser works with WebAuthn; many enterprises use one shared USB reader per desk or rely on built-in readers. The DESFire side uses your existing door readers. We will confirm the reader matrix against your IdP requirements in writing before you order.
What happens if an employee loses the card?
FIDO2 credentials are revocable from your identity provider the moment the loss is reported - a stolen card is useless outside the accounts it was enrolled on, because the origin binding blocks phishing and the key never leaves the card. Replacement cards enroll through the standard flow; the DESFire side re-issues through your normal badge process.
