What a Java Card is - and who actually needs one
A Java Card is not a chip - it is a chip plus an operating system that hosts software. Where a MIFARE Classic or NTAG card does exactly one fixed job, a Java Card is a small computer on which independent applications live side by side, each walled off from the others. That architecture is why banks, governments and transit authorities standardized on it - and why corporate campuses running several systems on one badge end up here too.
The practical test: if your program needs one credential to do two or more security-relevant jobs (building access + cashless + computer login), or your security policy demands applet-level isolation and cryptographic keys that never leave the chip, you are in Java Card territory. If the job is a single door-access or tap-marketing function, a fixed-function chip is cheaper and simpler - and we will tell you so rather than upsell.

Is a Java Card the same as a MIFARE DESFire card?
No. DESFire is a fixed-function chip: excellent at its one job (secure access/authentication), with its memory layout fixed by NXP. A Java Card hosts multiple applets behind a card OS with firewall isolation - different architecture, higher cost tier. If one system does everything you need, DESFire is usually the better buy; if one card must serve several systems securely, that is the Java Card use case.
