Hardwood-Veneer NFC Cards

RFID Wooden Card

FSC Hardwood Veneer

FSC hardwood-veneer NFC card with natural grain and embedded ISO/IEC 14443 inlay

Quick answer

Wooden NFC cards laminate FSC- or PEFC-certified hardwood veneer (birch, cherry, walnut, maple) over a thin inlay core carrying a standard ISO/IEC 14443 or 15693 chip. The grain aesthetic is the product story — every card is visually distinctive. And the substrate plugs into existing NFC reader and printer ecosystems exactly as PVC does. Right for hospitality room keys, wine-estate tasting-room cards, real-estate lead magnets and premium gift / welcome-kit programmes.

  • FSC / PEFC hardwood veneer (birch, cherry, walnut, maple) over NFC inlay core — every card carries a unique grain pattern.
  • NTAG21x / MIFARE Classic / MIFARE DESFire EV3 chip options — identical reader and printer compatibility to PVC cards.
  • Laser engraving and UV digital CMYK printing on grain — logos, vCards, loyalty QR and sequential numbers with no ink-on-ink hand-off issues.

Card body construction
  • 0.76–0.84 mm ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1 thickness sandwich: hardwood veneer top layer + RFID inlay core + hardwood veneer bottom layer.
  • Veneer thickness 0.25–0.35 mm per face; the core substrate carries the antenna and chip.
  • Water-based polyurethane adhesive (no solvent-based chemistry); clear protective top-coat finish in matte, silk or gloss.
Embedded inlay — chip options
  • NTAG213 (144 bytes) / NTAG215 (504 bytes) / NTAG216 (888 bytes) for NFC Forum Type 2 vCard, URI and product-authentication payloads.
  • MIFARE Classic 1K for loyalty and legacy-access programmes; MIFARE DESFire EV3 AES-128 for authenticated hotel-key and access deployments.
  • ISO/IEC 15693 ICODE SLIX available for shelf-sweep / bulk-scan scenarios such as premium-product authentication cards.
Radio transparency
  • Hardwood veneer is fully transparent to 13.56 MHz radio — no read-range penalty versus the same inlay in PVC.
  • Antenna tuning is adjusted for the wood substrate's dielectric constant; ProudTek ships tuned inlays as standard.
  • Moisture-stabilised veneer avoids seasonal humidity effects on antenna resonance that could otherwise detune the inlay.
Personalisation — laser engraving
  • CO2 laser at 10.6 μm wavelength produces permanent dark-brown marks by controlled carbonisation of the veneer surface — the canonical decoration method.
  • Engraving depth 0.05–0.15 mm; spot size 0.1–0.3 mm; typical throughput 300–600 cards per hour on a mid-power (60–80 W) laser.
  • Laser marking needs no ink, primer or post-processing — compatible with food-contact and allergen-sensitive hospitality settings.
Personalisation — UV digital print
  • UV flatbed CMYK (Mimaki / Roland / Mutoh class) prints directly onto the veneer; grain shows through for a distinctive layered aesthetic.
  • White base layer under the CMYK when the design requires opaque colour blocks — otherwise the grain reads through the ink.
  • Spot-foil (rose-gold, copper, matte-black) and blind-deboss available for premium welcome-kit and executive-card treatments.
Durability and protective finish
  • Protective clear coat (polyurethane or UV-cured acrylic) provides moisture and wear resistance for 2–4 year typical wallet life.
  • Not rated for laundry, marine or industrial wash environments — for those duty cycles, polycarbonate or UHF-on-metal form factors are the correct choice.
  • Grain aging is expected and part of the aesthetic; a protective finish slows but does not stop natural tonal change.
Deployment archetypes
  • Boutique and eco-lodge hotel room keys — room-key substrate aligned with the property's LEED, BREEAM or Green Key certification narrative.
  • Wine-estate tasting-room and wine-club loyalty cards — the material story reinforces the agricultural-craft brand positioning.
  • Premium-brand welcome kits — luxury apparel, artisan food and spirits, direct-to-consumer beauty brands that ship a branded NFC card with the first unboxing.
  • Executive and architect studio business cards — veneer-card variant of the engraved-business-card SKU for lower-volume executive use.
Environmental positioning
  • FSC / PEFC chain-of-custody hardwood is a managed-forestry product; carbon sequestered during tree growth offsets much of the card's embodied carbon footprint.
  • Veneer card body is biodegradable after inlay removal; the inlay (PET + copper + silicon) routes through standard WEEE e-waste channels.
  • Regrowth cycles are materially slower than Moso bamboo (30–80 years vs 3–5) — hardwood wins on grain aesthetic and luxury positioning, bamboo wins on fastest-renewable ESG narrative.
Regulatory and compliance
  • EU RoHS 3 (Directive 2011/65/EU) and REACH SVHC compliant — water-based adhesive avoids SVHC plasticiser concerns inherent to PVC.
  • CPSIA (US) lead and phthalate consumer-safety limits met by default.
  • EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR, 2023/1115) applies to wood placed on the EU market — FSC / PEFC CoC evidence supports due-diligence statements.
Reader and printer compatibility
  • Full compatibility with HID, Nedap, Suprema, Salto, Assa Abloy and Dormakaba reader ecosystems — chip-driven, not substrate-driven.
  • Card printers (Fargo, Zebra, Evolis) handle veneer cards with minor feed-roller adjustment for the 0.76–0.84 mm tolerance window.
  • Dye-sublimation printing is not recommended on veneer cards — laser engraving and UV digital print are the supported decoration paths.

Why hardwood-veneer cards earn their place in premium programmes that bamboo and PVC do not quite fit

Hardwood veneer is not the fastest-renewable substrate — bamboo is. It is not the toughest — polycarbonate and metal are. What it is, is the substrate where grain carries the brand signal. When the programme is premium-brand welcome kit, wine-estate tasting room, boutique hotel key or executive business card, the unique-grain visual story is what sells the substrate.

  • FSC / PEFCchain-of-custody certified veneer
  • 0.76–0.84 mmISO/IEC 7810 ID-1 thickness
  • 13.56 MHzNTAG21x / MIFARE / DESFire inlay
  • 2–4 yearstypical wallet-carry life with clear-coat finish

The engineering is simple. A 0.25–0.35 mm hardwood veneer sandwich around a standard NFC inlay core produces a 0.76–0.84 mm ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1 card body that prints, engraves, reads and files exactly as a PVC card does. The chip ecosystem (NTAG21x, MIFARE, DESFire EV3, ICODE SLIX) is unchanged; only the antenna tuning is adjusted for the wood substrate's dielectric constant.

The commercial choice between hardwood veneer and bamboo is a brand-narrative choice. Moso bamboo wins on the 3–5-year regrowth cycle that ESG teams want in their annual report. Hardwood veneer wins on grain aesthetic — every cherry, walnut and birch card is visually unique, which is exactly what luxury and premium programmes want. The reader, the inlay and the FSC / PEFC chain-of-custody discipline are shared.

FAQ

Are wooden NFC cards as durable as PVC?

They are built for wallet carry, badge holder insertion and normal tap-to-read duty — 2–4 year typical life with the clear-coat finish. Wood is a natural material and shows wear over heavy use; for laundry, marine or industrial wash environments PVC or polycarbonate cards are the correct choice.

Can wooden cards be printed with full-colour artwork?

Yes, via UV flatbed CMYK digital print. The natural wood grain shows through the print as part of the aesthetic. Designs that work with the grain look striking; for opaque colour blocks a white base layer is printed first. Laser engraving is the alternative for a no-ink, grain-into-the-wood branded look. Dye-sublimation is not recommended on wooden card stock.

Is the timber FSC-certified? What about EUDR?

Yes. We source from FSC / PEFC Chain-of-Custody certified suppliers and ship CoC documentation with every order. This supports EU Deforestation Regulation 2023/1115 (EUDR) due-diligence statements and EcoVadis / ISO 14001 supply-chain reporting. Species under CITES Appendix II (some Dalbergia rosewoods) are excluded from the catalogue.

How does a wooden card compare to bamboo?

Hardwood veneer wins on grain aesthetic — every card is visually unique. Bamboo wins on the 3–5-year regrowth cycle versus 30–80 years for hardwood, and on a slightly lower unit cost. Choice is narrative-driven: executive / luxury programmes gravitate to walnut or cherry veneer, fastest-renewable ESG stories gravitate to Moso bamboo. Reader and printer compatibility is identical.
